Who are we?

Museum Nusantara is dedicated to the history and cultures of Indonesia. Nusantara means the islands between two worlds.

This Museum developed out of an educational institute for the Dutch East Indies, the Indische Instelling (1864-1900), located in Delft. Civil servants were educated here in preparation for colonial service.

The museum collection has now been growing for almost 150 years due to donations of precious artefacts by private citizens, commercial interests and the government.

The museum is supported by an ethnographic club, the Etnografische Vereniging, and by a trust, the Stichting Nusantara. Museum Nusantara also cooperates with a number of partners.
